"Our aspirations are our possibilities. "

What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is a system for self-defense. It is also an art form that can trace its origins to ancient Korean civilization, well over 2000 years ago. “Tae Kwon Do”, literally translates to, “the way of the hand and foot”. In Korea, Grandmaster Instructors update and develop techniques to address proven self-defense applications in our world today. Contemporary Tae Kwon Do provides a fun and challenging activity for all ages with an emphasis on developing a, “healthy body, healthy mind”.

What is The Urban Dojang’s school philosophy?

The Urban Dojang is committed to improving the student’s health, fitness, and self-defense skills. Through proper physical conditioning, a student can then begin to develop effective self-defense skills. Our instructors focus on improving the student’s confidence, discipline, attention skills and coordination. Tae Kwon Do, if taught in a training environment that is empowering, challenging and safe, will ultimately provide students with deeply instilled values. Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit are the tenets that represent the true spirit of Tae Kwon Do.

What type of instructors and role models is the school presenting its students?

All of our instructors are certified through Tae Kwon Do’s premier certifying body, the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, headquartered in Soul, Korea. At The Urban Dojang, our instructors value and promote higher education. Instructors demonstrate that belief through their earned college degree, or are currently students pursuing a degree. Much more, we strive to model the tenets of Tae Kwon Do while instructing our students and to live by them, during our day to day lives.

Why name the school “The Urban Dojang”?

“Dojang” is the Korean word for Training Center and the English word “Urban” relates to characteristics of a city. In particular, we believe the most striking characteristic for most cities is the diversity of the people that inhabit the city. The Urban Dojang celebrates diversity and sees Tae Kwon Do as an activity that can bring people together, much like a city has the potential to do so. We offer our programs to all people regardless of age, gender, religion or ethnicity. Together, we can all build and live in a peaceful community. We should, “strive together to pursue excellence”.
